Insulated Hip Flask Wholesale and Private Label: MOQ, Moulds, Packaging

Once a buyer decides to put their own name on a flask, the economics change completely. The unit price stops being the only number and the real cost of the programme becomes tooling, decoration, packaging and the minimum order quantity on each of them. This is the calculation behind private-label hip flask programmes, and the point at which most first-time importers lose money — not on the flask, but on the packaging they did not realise had its own minimum.

The Real Cost of a Private-Label Hip Flask Programme

Four cost lines, and only one of them is the bottle:

Cost lineTypical rangeWhat it buys
ProductQuoted per unit, varies with capacity, wall construction and decorationThe flask itself, at 500 pieces MOQ on an existing model
ToolingUSD 1,000 for a stainless steel outer-shell mould; USD 2,000 for a full stainless steel mould; USD 2,000 for a plastic part mouldA new shape only. Once paid, the mould is yours and can move production between factories
Decoration setupUSD 50 for colour customisation on plastic products; USD 30 for spray-paint colourOne-time setup per colour or finish, not per unit
PackagingQuoted per set, with its own MOQ that is separate from the product MOQRetail gift box, printed sleeve or a branded pouch

Two of those lines are one-time and two are per-unit, and the packaging line is the one that surprises people. A 5,000-piece order in mixed colours on an existing shape with a printed gift box is a completely different programme from 5,000 plain units, and a supplier who quotes one number for both is quoting the flask and hoping you do not ask about the box.

Five Ways to Cut the Programme Cost

  1. Start on an existing shape. Tooling is the only line you pay for to change the silhouette. Laser engraving, screen printing, UV print, heat transfer and full-colour printing all work on an existing mould, and none of them require a new one.
  2. Mix models to reach MOQ. Ask whether the supplier will accept a mixed container across two or three models. That turns "3,000 pieces of one design" into "1,000 of each of three designs", which is often the difference between a programme that works and one that does not.
  3. Keep the packaging modular. A printed sleeve or a paper band over a standard box costs less and carries a lower MOQ than a rigid printed gift box, and it still reads as a private label at the shelf.
  4. Order the decoration setup once. If you are running the same flask in three colours for a retail range, the setup is per colour, so three colours cost three setups. Confirm in writing whether a colour added in a later order reuses the original setup.
  5. Write the packaging MOQ into the purchase order. It is the number that decides whether you can launch with a printed box in 2,000 pieces or have to launch with a plain box and a sticker.

What to Write Into the Purchase Order

Product: [model and reference], [capacity], [304 stainless steel / double-wall vacuum], in [colour and finish]. Decoration: [laser engraving / silk screen / UV / spray paint] applied to [position], with [artwork] approved on a signed sample dated [date]. Packaging: [description], at a minimum of [MOQ] pieces, packed [quantity] per master carton with carton dimensions [x]. Mould: [not required / a new [part] mould at USD [amount], owned by the buyer and held by the manufacturer against a signed record]. Quality: AQL 2.5 inspection before the container is sealed, sampling per ISO 2859-1 General Inspection Level II. Delivery: [X] days after artwork and sample approval.

Two clauses are worth more than the rest. The mould ownership clause is what lets you move production later, and it should say who holds it, where it is stored and what record exists. The packaging MOQ clause is what stops the launch being held up by a box you did not know had a minimum. Both are one sentence each, and both are the clauses most often missing.

Samples, Inspection and the Launch Sequence

The order of operations matters more than the negotiation. Fix the model and the decoration on a sample first — a physical sample, not a render — then sign it and keep a sealed copy on both sides. Samples of stock models ship in 1-3 days and custom samples take 7-10 days. Approve artwork against the signed sample rather than against a PDF. Then run production, inspect at AQL 2.5 before sealing, and ship.

How STWADD Runs a Private-Label Programme

STWADD is a factory-backed drinkware supply company in Yongkang, Zhejiang. We produce to your specification at audited partner factories we qualify and work with directly, with our own QC team stationed on the line, tooling control and AQL 2.5 inspection before the container is sealed. For hip flask programmes that means a specification sheet you can hand to a purchasing team, a mixed-container MOQ where the factory will accept it, spare caps and gaskets stocked as a separate line so your range stays alive, and replacement lids available long after the first shipment.

We publish the original third-party food-contact test reports for the models we make on our certifications page, and we will send you a production sample of the exact model before you approve it. The 2026 catalogue lists every model with capacity, material, carton quantity and packing detail, the flasks hub covers the wider range, and our OEM and ODM page sets out tooling costs, colour setup fees and lead times in full. Send us the channel, the quantity, the decoration and the packaging you have in mind, and we will tell you honestly what the programme will cost and where the margin goes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the MOQ for a private-label hip flask? From 500 pieces for custom decoration on an existing model, and 3,000 pieces if you need a new shape with new tooling. Packaging usually has its own separate minimum, so ask for the product MOQ and the packaging MOQ as two numbers.

How much does it cost to develop a new hip flask shape? USD 1,000 for a stainless steel outer-shell mould, USD 2,000 for a full stainless steel mould and USD 2,000 for a plastic part mould. Once paid, the mould is yours, and we recommend putting the ownership and storage record into the purchase order.

What does colour customisation cost? USD 50 for colour customisation on plastic products and USD 30 for spray-paint colour. These are one-time setup costs per colour or finish, not per unit, so a retail range in three colours carries three setups.

Can I mix models to reach my minimum order quantity? Ask. Many manufacturers will accept a mixed container across two or three models, which can turn an unreachable 3,000-piece single-design minimum into three reachable 1,000-piece runs. It also gives a retailer a range rather than a single SKU.

What packaging options are available for private-label flasks? Printed gift box with a fitted insert for gifting, a printed sleeve or paper band over a standard box for a lower minimum, and a plain box with a branded insert for cost. Each has its own MOQ, which should be written into the purchase order.

How long does a private-label hip flask programme take? Stock samples ship in 1-3 days, custom samples take 7-10 days, and custom production runs 25-30 days after artwork and sample approval. Ready-stock models can dispatch in 7-15 days.
